Are we inferior?

It’s not new in India to speak high about the work of the West and the opposite about the work of an Indian. Across the fields, the opinion would be the same with paltry exceptions. Hearing this all these years had intrigued me with a question in my mind – “Are we really inferior?” I would like to share the thoughts that are flashed in my mind, the answers provided by Google and few other questions that are digging my brain.

You are inferior – long been these words are being whispered in our ears. How long? History has the answer. It was the time where the English, the Dutch, the Portuguese and many such traders were trying their hand to establish their factory in the so called ‘Land of Riches’. Through fair and foul means, each one of them had managed to establish their factories and as a consequence their products were trying their hand in the Indian market against Indian products.

The workmanship of Indians was such that they were one of the best in the then world. The blend of Indian, Persian and Greek delicacy was seen across all crafts. Unfortunately, for the infighting Indians, overtime, the factories became forts, tradesmen became soldiers, and companies became rulers. Europeans, especially the British and the French, were showering in the goods that came after the “Age of Enlightenment.” Capitalism started taking roots along with the Industrial Revolution. Investment was flooding, new machines got assembled and the unit cost of a product got cheaper, too cheap that it was able to negate the home advantage of ‘the Third World’.

Still a challenge remained, perhaps the last. Handmade products were much sought after by Indians than the industry made ones. Then came the Western disturbance and Westerlies with a whisper from Europe – “You are inferior”. With gun and words, the empire building Europeans were in a position to buy anything in India. Indians were made to sell raw materials and not finished products. Import tax was slashed on European products and homemade products were taxed. Export tax for Indian goods was over 300% - for example piece of cloth was sold at Rs.100 with more than Rs.75 going towards tax. Slowly, the artists and craftsmen were abandoning their trades. They lost their patrons – former royals of India, and then they were taxed to stop making finished products and finally, the whisper.

The whisper was sound enough such that its echoes are still reverberating in an Indian’s ears. It was a thought that was carefully planted, watered and nurtured by the colonists for their benefits. Centuries of delicate workmanship were lost in the sand of history. The past glory was forgotten and the slave life got saved in the mind.

Even after independence, much didn’t change. Caste discrimination remained, girls were still the secondary sex, corruption swelled and so does the echoes of the whisper. Still we were taught to compare two things – the West and the East, the high and the low, the White and the Black. It was inculcated in every Indian’s blood – by parents, teachers and by the society. On the global scale, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is being used. Among parents and teachers, marks and ranks take primacy. Comparison by earning is reserved for the society. Everyone compare; everything got compared.

Comparison became necessary. It’s the point where efficiency stood up. After all, all a chased deer need is to outrun, not the lion but another deer, to see another day. A wildebeest, another prey, or a bison cannot compare its speed with that of a deer or a gazelle. It would be foolishness to do so and ten out of ten times the bison will land in the losing side – Comparison of the incomparable. The bison traded its speed for its mass (lions dare not to kill a bison mob), zebra traded its mass and speed for the confusing stripes and gazelles got speed.

The above fact should not be limited to the grasslands of Savannahs. Men inspire from nature and applying the same here won’t be an unwise act. Yes, we are comparing the incomparable. For the first 50 years after that historic midnight and Tryst with Destiny speech, we cocooned ourselves by comparing the Islamic republic of Pakistan and the Secular, Democratic Republic of India. We ran many races – in arms, in development, and international politics, as if we had only one opposition. India won every race but failed to win any cup.

Then came “the Asia Century” catch phrase. After winning every race against our North Western neighbor, we stretched our muscles against the People’s Republic, a race between a tiger and a dragon. Odds are clearly not in our favor. But that’s how it can be when we are inferior. But against Pakistan, we reigned supreme. So, we are not inferior. It’s a bad conclusion as we have pretended to compare India and Pakistan, though Pakistan didn’t, as we actually compared India with the West. Now the equation holds true – We are inferior!

All we failed to understand in all these years is that we have only one in this world with whom we can compare ourselves, to see just the progress – It’s us! An eagle with lesser values, a colonial leech, a dragon without democracy, a hammer and sickle dipped in blood, a slow but steady walking elephant, a racist kangaroo and a white colored rainbow are the ones we have compared. Sounds crazy? So does the result – We are inferior.

India, as a nation, stands on the bedrocks of secularism, socialism, democracy, and individual rights and No first offence and non-alignment as State policy. No nation in the above mentioned has all these. Some are aligned, some has fewer rights and some are racists. So, how come these nations got qualified to get compared against India, a country that had a greater democracy, equality of rights and socialism as a goal? A city state like Singapore can easily be developed than a nation which itself has many biomes. Using geographical terms, I just wished to show how the two countries are different in every aspect and cannot be put to comparison in the same weigh.

My country had a rich past. My country is having an aspiring present. My country will have a bright future. Shortage of food is a thing of the past, the chain of bondage was long been broken and the prediction that India will not stand united after a decade of its independence was proved to be a harbinger’s lie. I can compare an India that has begged to feed its people and an India that is exporting agriculture surplus, an India that was refused a super computer and an India that is achieving in indignation, an India that was a pawn in global politics and an India that is a Grand Master. Are we inferior?

The Magic of Mushrooms

Any life in this vast earth cannot sustain on its own. Well, few of us know this as a scientific fact and many of us as a philosophical thought. This documentary is one such infotainment, where the basic relationship between fungus and plant life is clearly explained.

For those who ridicule symbiosis, this one is such a programme, where your idea will be put to test. The world of mushroom is as amazing as a child with intrigue when his/her eyes first view a white calcareous bud in the neighbourhood during Autumn.

Imagine a world without fungus! You won't be here to imagine at all!!!

Unity in Diversity, My Experience!

"Unity in Diversity" and so goes the speeches of many Indians who are connected with Nationalism and State authority. Every Indian, mostly the schooled and schooling, is very proud in uttering these words on every January 26 or August 15 or during any speeches that are connected with Independence and India. No doubt, India is a diverse country, a fact that can be supported by its sixth place in World Cultural Diversity Index. Yet, here arises a question – does the Indians themselves, in reality, are really proud of their “Unity in Diversity” and respect the diversity their land hosts?

Most of my classroom learning had been in Tamil Nadu and to be exact Perundurai, a taluk in Erode District. I ‘m one such proud lad, as said in the above paragraph but never had an opportunity to know what people outside Tamil Nadu think about Tamil people. Fortunately though, I had my post-graduate diploma course done in an institution that hosts people from different parts of the country, yet, unfortunately, dominated by one state. Some states went unrepresented also. Yet it is mosaic of culture.

For all the years till that, I taught to be a proud citizen of India and being Tamil gave an extra feather. But I was never taught in school or in college that I would get ridiculed outside Tamil Nadu for being a “Madarasi”, a slur word used to term people from South India. More importantly, it was also the time when Lankan civil war got over and all political speeches in Tamil Nadu were targeting Indian National Congress (INC) for its dirty hand in massacring ethnic Tamils and Dravida Munnetra Kalagam (DMK) for its betrayal and backstabbing. More so, Rasa, a Union minster from Tamil Nadu representing DMK was seen as the grand architect of 2G scam – another black mark for a Tamil.

Speaking in favour of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) or for innocent Tamils was a taboo. You will get branded as “Terrorist”, if you did, more so by the ‘Gang’ who readily despises ‘Biharis’ for unemployment in their state, a half-witted one. It was the first time, I realised that things in books are just bookish and people in reality are bullish. Yet, every teacher used to prise Tamil Nadu for its progress in economy, women rights and more importantly for its tolerance. And, as expected, the Gang used to fume and write some blathers and had shown their artistic skills in depicting women in a way that will be termed as uncivilized and barbaric in a civilized world, works of a lunatics perhaps.

People from Tamil Nadu were not alone to face the harassment. The word “Bihari” or “Chinky” or “Punjabi” is used to ridicule. The hardship of a Bihari, the tolerance of a Chinky or the valour of a Punjabi was never respected. Though, wondered at first instance about the un-Indian behaviour, after reading the politics of the Gang state, I got to the core why people are like that. “Ko yevvali, Kudi avvali” (How the King is, so are his people) is a famous Tamil saying and I just got where the problem was. Perhaps that “Sher” was just a “Sher” only in jungle where it belongs. And the days passed on, with increasing hatred and animosity.

Till the dusk of my course, a Tamil was never understood. Perhaps it needed brain!

But many events after that bitter experience, and love of the people who belonged to that Gang state itself taught me that Diversity was never a thing to be ridiculed. I had seen many such headless chickens at my own backyard and having many factors to blame for their state of affairs. Literacy is what that is taught at institutions and qualities like civilization, sympathy and empathy are the ones that one should get acquire from the society, that includes such instititions also.

“A Chain is no stronger than its weakest link”. India is no stronger when the weakest qualities of intolerance, narrow-mindedness, partisan and sectarianism get acquired by their people. India should rise, with liberal, free-minded and civilized minds to unchain the bonds of past barbarism to make this land really a “Union of Diversity” that got accepted, respected, practiced and loved.

The curious case of Umashankar

Of late, in India, government servants are trending in social networking sites - thanks to their acts, may it be valor or corruption or whistleblowing or irresponsible comments. Here is the curious case of Umashankar! An IAS officer preaching for a particular religion.

India is a democracy bedded on the rocks of fundamental rights for its citizens and right to propagate a belief is one of them. Yet people clamour about his act except the community for which he is preaching. One might strongly advocate in his favour that he wish to do so at his leisure. One cannot argument against this as many top bureaucrats had showed a precedence in the way of writing books, participating in Non-governmental services etc.

Yet, in a country like India, where IAS is considered as a top-rank in bureaucracy and still people having a fascination about it, its is obvious that people may get swayed by the speaker with a IAS rank - if not for speech at least for his rank. Umashankar should be allowed to propagate his belief or religion, but without using his bureaucracy rank in preaching gatherings. Gathering and impact for Bro.Umashakar's preaching will be different from Umashankar IAS' preaching.

More importantly, government should enact a suitable law to regulate religious speeches, gatherings, festivals and its depiction in media. The law and punishment should be such that politicians should mind their tounge and brain when commenting about religions and caste. This will avoid unnecessary wastage of time and resources in giving asnwers, repairing the damages and unnecessary fear in public etc.

Long may live India that is secular!

Destiny unites us!

Where was the voice of the self-proclaimed Indians when Modi proudly stated in Japan "Being a Gujarati, commerce runs in my veins"? Where was the voice of Hindi-North who rise their antithetical voice when the issues of language and regional problems were echoed when the Prime Minister of India identified in a foreign land that he is a Gujarati?

Your mind should know that every state and community has an identity and the Indian feel among us will not have no secondary rank to our regional identity. When majority tries to mull our identity, we will rise and that rise is not against Indian unity but majoritarian hypocrisy.

What unites Indians is not Hindi but history, culture and destiny!

Friendship, bygone!

He is my best friend. I know him inside-out!!!

He is one of my close friends!!

He is my friend!

He is my classmate in class x, if I'm right.

We studied together sometime...

Yeah, I know him.

I think I know him. Yeah, now I remember.

Yeah, I have heard that name!

I will recognize once I see his face.

Sorry! Couldn't!!!!

Once the so called best friend is now a stranger!!!

Moral of the Timeline : Relationship, perhaps an alliance, forged on necessity would be bygone once such a necessity doesn't exist!!!

When Man Takes Over!

The Park is flooded with Homo sapiens who flocked to witness a scientific marvel. The director of the park looked tensed and proud.  This event is such an honour for him. The honour of being director of the only ‘Park’ that hosts ‘The Woolly Mammoth”. Well, this is not a science fiction story! A future truth as men takes over the job of creation from nature.

The Woolly Mammoth, the much hyped of all the de-extinction species

Like many, I made my mobile a part of my body. Celebrated Spirit’s successful landing, elated when my country launched Chandrayaan. My mind is still anxious about the fate of Mangalyaan. At its day of destination, it’s another moment of party. But definitely not for the above one!

I ‘m of the opinion, religion should never be an impediment to science because, ‘creation’ is only nature and not Godly! So my opinion has nothing to do with religion. The idea here is ethics, morality and concern.

The Pyrenean Ibex, a species that is hunted to extinction. It is briefly resurrected for just 10 minutes and died due to lung problems, the most common among cloned and resurrected.

Though 6,000 years is a minute period in geology, it’s a comprehensive period in human evolution and anthropogenic activities. In the past 6,000 years, we altered the face of nature than ever before. This includes the habitat of the Woolly Mammoth, the much hyped of all the extinct species. There is no more ice age and even the remnants of the last Pleistocene are fast disappearing. Even an artificial habitat like that of “the park’ is still an extravagance considering the fact that one-third of our brethren go hungry.

The Saber-tooth Cat, an ice-age predator

The resurrection of such extinct species would have less or no genetic diversity and ultimately lead to genetic inbreeding and hence extinction.  More importantly, who will teach the Woolly to graze, the Dodo to fly and breed and the Saber to hunt? They would naturally be living an unnatural life!

Velocirapor, the Jurassic Park fame predator. Went extinct 71 million years ago (late cretaceous).
Even if every obstacle is turned positive, the living species would be more an exhibition showdown than a living creature. Luckily, we don’t have to fear for human life as the Velociraptors and T-Rexes can’t be resurrected with present technology. Who knows, people like John Hammond and InGen may come in future to do that!

If such animals really deserve a resurrection, let nature do it!

In the Neverland!

Indian Teams, since ages, have one thing in common - not so threatening bowling attack! It is so much the face of Indian Cricket Team that fans see India like that. India's sheer dominance on the field, without doubt,  is due to their batting fire power.

Are we the best batters? Yes! Only in our turf! And an above average team in the sub-continental pitches! Abroad - well it is a mystery land! Victory, most of the time, remains elusive for the men in blue. We never tried to chase it - means we never thought of implementing the plans that experts are giving to plug the holes in our parachute.

Bumpers are our biggest enemy! I still wonder why India is not proposing an amendment against the cricket rule that allows one bouncer per over!? I think that may save India's batting face overseas.

The World Champion, The Champion of Champions and World's Second Best ODI Team (Had I posted this before the New Zealand tour it would be World's Best ODI Team) are the tags we are carrying now! (Don't know for how long!) Still we lose to a team that's Cricketing rank, relatively, is in abyss. Loss against the Rainbow Nation is excusable (again, the typical Indian mindset). Yet the way we were routed make nothing, but blood in eyes and heart!

Except the Captain and his deputy none of the hunters in blue were comfortable - struggling against swing, bumpers, pace and what not? What India should do to rein supreme in the other shores? is a template recommendation that one can see in media whenever we tour outside! The question is - what we had done to those 'blabbers'? No pitch in India is supporting Pacers. No condition in India is favorable to pacers and short ball handlers except their need in the team!

As the phrase 'Bad carpenter blames his tools', we blame and curse the fielding restrictions for our bowlers' dismal show. Rules are common. Men make it good and bad! It won't be necessary to say what it is to us! A curse deadlier than the one that is upon the Captain of the Flying Dutchman!

India's best area in bowling department - the spin - is equally bad. We have spinners whose balls never spun the web around the opponent in the 'alien land'. Be it the Spin Quads of 80's or the Spin Double of last decade or the Young Brigades of present, a classical spinner performed win remains elusive. And it would remain so until the the step towards rectifying it is made!

This is not a scribbling of an Indian fan who is fed up with India's recent outings against Proteas and Kiwis. It is the snippet of the feeling that remains resounding in the hearts of 'The Billion Plus'!

To conclude - Think and Act!!!

Don't Vandalize the Idol!

A big win, innings plus, would be a fitting tribute for the Little Master. I was much annoyed by the 'crowd' that howled for declaration as soon as he got out so that he would bat in the second innings, the fourth innings of the match. I sense no wisdom but absolute madness in that clamour. Even the Master himself won't be pleased with either the declaration or the clamour!

Admire him, but don't vandalize his image in the name of Fans!

Rape the Masculine Superiority Syndrome!

Inhuman, barbaric, heinous or what ever the adjective it may be, my heart will shed blood when ever it happens for my ears to hear the news of rape and murder. These horrific acts ask one very question - where are we heading as a society? With even the day-to-day affairs of feminine gender in all ages turning nightmarish, what is to be done?

The chorus cry would be, "hang the those animals!". Does harsher law - say, capital punishment, by any means will deter the ever increasing violence against non-males? I would say that it may bring a reduction in increasing crime rate. But that would be paltry. Still women would be living in an acidic environment. The need is not a paltry reduction, but banishment of such violence. By no way either capital punishment nor castration will banish the violence against women. And who to hang? More than 92% of sinners are friends, relatives, fathers , neighbors or some way known to the victim.

The need of the hour is cultural change. Only the cultural change can bring a radical change in the proliferating crime rate. First, the way men fraternity look women should change. Women are symbol of love, care and affection. But by no means they are weak. Stop the nonsense of "protecting women" kind of attitude. If society wish to teach something, definitely the students are not women. Civilize the men fraternity. Rather than putting restrictions on daughters, educate sons - women are not glamour dolls and men are not their savior. Teach sons how to cook, wash cloths and household chores. This, for sure, will eliminate the "masculine superiority syndrome". Fathers by sharing the above said with their wives can be examples for their sons.

Dressing is a reason that usually the society uses to justify such acts. Did any women complain about the dress we wear? No. So why complaining about theirs?  In that eyes even their mother would look like... (It is better to censor that word myself). Like us, they have all right to wear dress of their wish. We have no right to determine their dress code. When dress is the reason, why men force upon a three year old kid or a 70 year old grandma. Saddest thing is, women are raped from birth till their last breath by body, eyes and words.

If I have one thing to foul at government, it has to be the their policy - alcohol shops. If we look at carefully at all the crimes, more than 90% of the person involved were in the influence of alcohol or addicts. It may or maynot provoke the sexual desire, but surely will take away one's sense. Innocent children and daughters are the most vulnerable when a person is under the influence of alcohol.

Policing plays an important role in bring the crime rate down. A case must be registered as soon as any one approaches. A recent statistics by RTI shows the dismal record of police in our country. The conviction rate in rape and related cases were not even 50%. Technology and efficiency in police department should improve, a big hole that must get plugged very soon. People involved in any crime should not go unpunished. A harsher law can't, but an efficient policing can deter the proliferating crime rate.

In silver screen women are mostly objects of glamour. They are shown weak (with rare exceptions), an object of possession, a creature that always need men's shoulders to sustain in the society and masculinity means protecting and possessing them along with fighting. Rub the notion of "cinema is a reflection of society". It may be true, but only in very few cases and this is not in that very few. Cinema business needs story and not masculinity and skin.

On the whole, society - family, friends and relatives must put their effort in  bringing a change. No men lives outside the above said. After-all, I can wait for my mom/wife/daughter/friend/sister to come late but can't keep fearing their safety. Dear men folks, let us walk in a civilized path!
